BarCamp LA: Do Bloggers need a Code of Standards?

It’s been a stellar day here at BarCamp LA complete with educational break out groups and Ninja Self-Defense.

Today’s sessions varied from OpenID to Weaponizing Noam Chomsky. I was lucky to secure a spot for us to discuss spinning Blogger Reps off into a non-profit. We received incredible feedback from participants in our group including ideas for funding, member participation, offering health insurance, local and national events, education, media literacy, and blogger mentorships.

One issue that dominated the conversation is whether the org should propose and enforce a code of journalistic standards for its members. My knee-jerk reaction was of course, but upon further introspection I questioned how a code of standards fits into a medium that prides itself on having no rules. Why adhere to an old school notion that in the past, has restricted access to information based on corporate political bias and lack of a diverse set of media outlets? Who will define these standards? Will it lead to restriction of freedom of speech? Intra-organizational politics are a part of human nature (high school anyone?) and non-profits are no different.

In our newsletter, LilyKat proposed the notion of “responsible blogging;” contribute to the conversation, don’t detract from it. Perhaps, instead of focusing on restriction, we should encourage contribution. After all, isn’t that what blogging is and should be all about?

Why I Blog

Culture SaladBy Ray Ellis

Considering that blogging as we know it was in its embryonic stages less than ten years ago, it’s a quantum factor in the evolution of communication.

Let me rephrase that—it’s not an evolution—it’s a revolution.

Why We Write: The (Blog) Sequel

By Lilly Kat
Lilly Kat

It’s been an awkward couple of months in my area of the blogging world.

We at Pass the Remote been dealing with a big white elephant: the ongoing strike of the Writer’s Guild of America, who, as of this writing, just settled with the AMPTP. This has made things challenging for us given that we’re a television blog. Although we’re not quite desperate enough to write about American Gladiators or Who Stole My Wallet (OK, so that one is not a real show, but anything goes with the networks these days), we are getting creative.

Blogging Perspectives

By Michael “Shogun” Hatamoto

I entered the world of “new” journalism approximately seven years ago by writing reviews and editorials. This, of course, was before blogging became such a hit. Since then, I have managed to turn my ramblings into a paying hobby which has helped me pay my college tuition and afford to go out on the town, buying dinner and drinks for those close to me.

Call for Entries - Blogger Reps Newsletter

Welcome to the new and improved Blogger Reps Update!  And, what, pray-tell is on the top of the Update?  Why the launch of our very own newsletter of course!!

Now, we at Blogger Reps are all about you, so where do you come in with the newsletter?  Well, you can of course shoot us an e-mail and ask to receive the newsletter, it’s free of charge (how cool are we?), but you can also write for the newsletter.  That’s right, you can pen (or type if you prefer) a piece or two (or more) for us.  Even better than that though, we’re going to pay you to do it!

Here’s the deal, the newsletter covers an array of topics of importance to you, the blogger.  It’ll discuss monetizing your blog, publicizing your blog, blogging as a lifestyle, and a couple of other truly swell things.  And, as may have been mentioned above, a lot of the pieces are going to be written by you.

The first issue of the Newsletter is going to focus mainly on the lifestyle aspect of blogging - we want to know about how and why you started blogging.  So, please, take some time, write up a 200 - 300 word piece on what caused you to start blogging, how you’re doing with your blog, and what you’ve learned from it.  Then, e-mail it to our Newsletter Editor, Josh Lasser, by the 24th of January and if your piece is chosen we’re going to give you $40.

Awesome right?  You know you’re in, shoot Josh an e-mail and show him what you got.

Update: Blogging Shield Laws

Just a quick update to our previous story about blogger shield laws in the works at Congress: Friday, Aug. 2, a bill that would protect bloggers’ rights to maintain the confidentiality of sources passed the House Judiciary Committee. So far, the bill maintains a fairly loose definition of the “journalists” it will protect, but “financial gain or livelihood” earned by blogging is still a prerequisite.

A similar version of the bill is under consideration by the Senate; right now, the House version of the bill has strong support from both parties, as well as the support of over 40 organizations affiliated with journalism and/or the media.

The story’s still in development, and the end result unknown, but we’ll try to keep you posted on any news pertaining to this issue.
